Our Heritage

Established in 1973, Hurrens Butchers has been serving Stevenage for over half a century.

The story begins with Ray Hurren, a skilled butcher who spent many years working in the butchery department at Fine Fare in Stevenage. Ray believed that proper butchery was a craft. It required patience, knowledge, and a deep respect for quality ingredients.

In 1973, with experience behind him and a strong reputation in the town, Ray decided to open a butcher’s shop of his own in Stevenage Town Centre.

From the beginning, Hurrens was built on simple principles:
provide great quality meat, treat customers honestly, and offer the kind of service that only an independent family butcher can give.

The shop quickly became a familiar part of town life. Generations of families came through the doors for their Sunday roasts, barbecue cuts and weekly shop. Advice was always part of the service, whether helping customers choose the right cut, preparing something special for a celebration, or simply translating pounds into kilos at the counter.

When Ray retired in 2010, the business passed to the next generation, with Paul and Sue Hurren continuing the family tradition while guiding the business into a new chapter.

While the retail shop remains at the heart of Hurrens, the business has grown over the years into a respected catering butcher, supplying local restaurants, businesses, schools and care homes with the same quality, reliability and service that built the original shop.

Today, more than 50 years after Ray first opened the doors, Hurrens Butchers continues to stand for traditional values, expert craftsmanship and a strong connection to the local community.

Because to us, butchery has never just been about meat.

It’s about feeding families, supporting local institutions, and being a trusted part of the community for generations.
